The Prestige

Monday, July 2nd, 2007

First comes the pledge, when the audience is shown something ordinary but probably is not. [Salesman shows you a 37″ or larger plasma or LCD television with a DVD player]

Then comes the turn, when an ordinary act is made extraordinary. [Salesman inserts a normal movie DVD into a DVD player and the movie looks quite crappy. (Standard movie DVD have resolutions NTSC 720×480 or
PAL 720×576 so it still looks crappy on a television that’s supposed to play stuff at 720p or 1080i)]

Lastly, there’s the prestige, when the ordinary object is restored through extraordinary means. [Salesman shows you a DVD player and plays the same DVD in it, and the video is crystal clear. ]

[After that, the salesman will explain “Video Upscaling” and tries to sell you the DVD player…]

Thanks to “Video Upscaling”, I was able to enjoy “The Prestige” fully (at least in terms of visual quality)…

The Prestige For those who haven’t watched “The Prestige”, its a movie about two rival magicians who bears deep grudges for each other, constantly plotting and backstabbing each other…

The movie is quite interesting and enjoyable especially for anyone interested in “magical illusions” as many interesting illusions were shown in the show itself, the different ways the thwart each other’s acts were also quite interesting but might be “gruesome” for some… Not to mention the twists in the movie…

Anyways, the three steps in the first part of this entry is actually the 3 steps to a stage illusion, which the movie constantly touches on…

Ya… So if anyone is thinking of buying a “HDREADY” or “FULLHD” television, please get a DVD player that upscale videos, otherwise you will be kinda disappointed by the video quality of DVD you watch….
